Get Better With Time

I’m fascinated by the way we keep time. In fact I admire it so much I have an hour glass tattooed on my body. I think it captures my attention so much because all of us have a limited amount of it, and relatively, an abundance of it as well.

But what do we do with our time? Often, use and abuse it, not even thinking about how we are investing it. In fact, we usually use the term ‘spending’ far more than we use ‘investing’ when we speak of our time. I read a terrifying statistic this morning…

The average reader reads between 200-400 words per minute (I’m at 205, checked right away). At that pace, most of us could read about 200 books a year, which would be roughly 417 hours spent that year reading. Now here is the horrifying stat: the average 21 year old male has played around 10,000 hours off videos games, and the average American spends 705 hours on social media, and lastly, we average 2,737 hours of tv a year. YIKKKEESS! (The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, John Mark Comer. pg72).

Often when you talk about reading with people, they say they don’t have time, but for the most part, they just need to improve how they diversify their time.

So, here is a simple step to help be in charge of your time…

Aim to cut out 15 minutes of tv or social media this week in exchange for picking up a book. The hardest part about cultivating a strong reading habit is just picking up and opening the book. So don’t say you’re going to read 10 pages or 1 chapter or whatever, just have the goal to open the book and read the first sentence.

Honestly, I think we all know that we spend time more than we invest it. So this week make it your goal to raise your awareness on how you use your time!

In the meantime, track your time!
